I've hand carried one bottle of wine into Mexico with no problems. Of course, I've never had the "red" light before.

They just don't sell good wine in Cancun, huh? I thought I was the only one who noticed! I can only get a good glass of wine when we are out to dinner at a nice restaurant. Any suggestions?

Mexico is one of my favorite places on earth but the wine down there is terrible. We ALWAYS bring a couple of good bottles with us. When we drive down and spend 3 months in the summer in Mexico, we bring at least a case. In our new home which is under construction, we are having a nice wine refridgerator installed in the kitchen just like we have in our home here in the USA. Once stocked, we will set. I highly suggest bringing your own wine. Maz

I believe you are allowed 2 bottles each to bring into Mexico. We have done this each year but always run out

We have bought wonderful wine in Cancun. The wine from Chili is awesome. My mom who drinks wine, loves to go and shop to see what she can find.

nazclk: I don't know if you mean Puerto Vallarta, but if you do, they sell good wine in Wall Mart and Sam's Club, they have California wines, Wines from Chili and of course excellent German wine, which I drink mostly apart from a Robert Mondavi or Woodridge or some Vandange, but I am not a wine expert just know what I like and always find it in PV. I love Ice Wine, or a good Schnaps i.e. Apple Schnaps for desert etc. If anyone should know where to find a good wine, if available for the expert, it should be MAZ.

We just love it also in PV and have got as far as enjoying 2 months next year at the Flamingos. Thats great Maz lucky you.

In Cabo there are several places where you can buy top of the line wines. There is a store in Cabo called Europa that rivals the best wine store as far as selection that you would find in California. Also, some of the mega stores (like CCC and Soriana's) have good wine sections and also carry good wines as well. There is a premium (about 10-20 percent) but there are many choices that are excellent. Harvey

Paula,

Its a bad addiction This is our 3rd property down there. All are in Punta Mita. Once the new one is finished in July, both of the others will be rental properties. We were going to sell one of the other 2 but the rentals have been too good over the last 2 years. If you love the region you ought to pick something up..Dont be scared!! We spend 4 months a year down there now and love it more and more every year. What is it that worries you? Maz

Cymomtx is correct, the Chilli wine is very good and if I remember it is less than $10 a bottle. That was at the Royal Resorts Store - probably even better priced if you make the trip to Wal-Mart or Sams.

We had a good Mexican cabernet one year in Cancun. I don't think the Mexican wines are all bad, you just have to find the right ones.

I usually bring a carry on suitcase that is completely wine and "Guinness" beer. You think good wine is hard to buy? Try finding Guinness beer.

Everyone always laughs at me for having the booze suitcase.

I have gotten the red light a couple of times. When they see the 4-6 bottles of wine and 6-8 pints of beer, I just point to the others in my group (we usually go down with several people)and say its for all of us. So far, no problems.

MAZ; well firstly it's the medical. We are somewhat older than you although very healthy and active so of course we worry about if anything major should happen. We are happy with our dentist Dr. Penalva, ex. and the Dr's I have visited for the odd ear infection etc at Paradise Village were ex. but major problems!!! We missed out 4 years ago on the Marina Condo's at Paradise Village could have picked one up for $240,000 approx. Now the Real Estate has gone sky high, you cant' own water frontage has to be 50ft plus back and it's only lease hold. I guess I am thinking it will be hard for my son to sell and do we want to sell this house, which overlooks the ocean in Vancouver and move into a condo here. So we are torn between the devil and the deep blue sea!!!!!!!!!!

Officially Your allowed 3 liters total of wine, liquor or beer per Adult duty free.
If your taking more that That you must declare it befor pushing the Red/Green light. You will then have to pay the required duty on the excess your taking into Mexico.
If you press the red/green light without declaring it and you get a Red light you could be subject to a penalty or Fines.

Since we now have one of our weeks confirmed and are awaiting the next, we can officially say we are going to Mazatlan next February!

We haven't been for 4 long years, and since then our 'wine' palettes have improved somewhat so I am wondering if anyone has found a place to buy there.

thanks
Diane

Paula,

The medical care in Mexico is excellent. Its one of the many reasons why so many retirees are moving to mexico....

By the way...Dr Penalva and his wife are our neighbors out in Punta Mita and also our dentist...

Dont let the leasehold issue bother you as it is re-newable for a nominal fee. In the end, owning Mexican real estate isnt much different than owning real estate in the USA...

You are correct about real estate on the ocean in Mexico booming. 2 of our properties have almost doubled in Value in less than 5 years and one doubled in a year. It wont even be finished until July!

If you love Mexico get in while you can!! Maz
